What do you think of the local press?

I’m all for local press (obviously!) and for using it to hold local organisations to account when necessary, but I’ve always seen local newspapers posted through your door as nuisance junk mail rather than a helpful resource. Nevertheless, today I picked the one stuck in my letter box out and read the first page. The lead story opened with the words “Tight fisted Wandsworth Council…” and later went on to use one resident’s quote that included a blanked out swear word.
The point of the article may have been valid, but the way it was written was bizarre. It wasn’t even a comedy article, although I did read halfway through hoping for the punchline. It was all too reminiscent of the Daily Mail or The Sun shock tactics. With The Guardian already foreseeing the end of the local newspaper, what are your thoughts on them? Do you read them? How can they improve to secure their future?

The newspapers in our area are pretty bad I have to agree. Then most local papers are. The stories in them I never really want to read about and they’re full of terrible adverts. I don’t know why businesses don’t just use sites like this more. This is where people in the area come to for info.
I tend to agree with the article quoting: “For the older generation, these things matter. [...] But the younger generation don’t much care.”
But when you want to let people know about something nowadays, you have not only to think about web/twitter or local newspaper/leaflets… but to both at the same time to spread the words.
Hey Cyril, you’re right, we should be using all means possible and papers are good – the Lambeth Council paper is actually one of the best (I promise I’m not totally council biased, I just like the format and writing). I guess it’s always going to be hard to get young teenagers to care about local issues, but while I’m no whipper snapper at 27, I still think I’m relatively young and I definitely care!
