Tomorrow, Thursday 5 May 2011, there will be a referendum on the voting system used to elect MPs to the House of Commons. The referendum could potentially change the current system and asks you to vote yes or no to an alternative proposal. By now you will have received your ballot papers, which will entitle you to a vote on this question: At present, the UK uses the ‘first past the post’ system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. Should the ‘alternative vote’ system be used instead?
