JG_SW4 replied to the topic Re: Please can you help in the forums.
The forums editor has a formatting bar so you think it's an RTF editor but then it goes ahead and puts those annoying mark-up codes which is fine for us tech-geek-heads but rather off putting to your avg. punter.

Jack Wallington created a new topic Do you think of Clapham Junction as Clapham? in the forums.
To be honest, I don't think anyone actually cares except those who have a vested interest in the borough boundaries, but it does my head in when people ask why Love Clapham reports on Clapham Junction because it's in Battersea.
I actually don't believe that the boundaries matter at all. The reason Love Clapham includes Clapham Junction is for multiple reasons:

I actually don't believe that the boundaries matter at all. The reason Love Clapham includes Clapham Junction is for multiple reasons:
- Clapham Junction is a neighbour of Clapham, used and visited frequently by Clapham residents and vice-versa. Even if you don't count it as Clapham, it's still relevant to residents in the same way Balham, Stockwell etc are.
- It has 'Clapham' in the name, so like it or not, lots of people think it actually is Clapham. I can't count the number of times my friends have said "oh I'm moving to Clapham too" when it's Clapham Junction.
- While the councils and people with an interest in the differences between the two boroughs may care a lot about the boundaries, for a site like this it doesn't matter two hoots. A website can quite easily report on both - and Love Clapham does.
- The official boundaries are irrelevant to the community. While officially Clapham Junction is part of Battersea (and I'm not saying that should change at all - I don't care) the local community, at least in my view, is so closely tied to Clapham Common. Clapham Common is the heart of this community and is one of the primary reasons people move to the area, whether it's Clapham Junction, Clapham South, Clapham Old Town etc. Of course Clapham Junction / Northcote Roaders have Wansworth Common too, but Clapham Common plays its part. Also, Clapham Junction has had 'Clapham' in its name for many decades now - for all intents and purposes, by name it is part of Clapham. Because of the prominence of Clapham Common and the name Clapham Junction, I would strongly argue that it makes more sense to think of the Clapham community stretching form Clapham Junction station, to Clapham South to Clapham North, round to Clapham Common and Old Town and back again.
Rant over :)

Hi Jack, I'm an online marketer so if there is anything I can help with I'd be happy to be involved. I think the site is easy to navigate.
Your ideas regarding the user generated Events Calendar is great, I'm imagining something along the lines of DontStayIn.com. I also think, though it's nice not to have advertising, it is expected to see ads on sites like this. Google Contextual ads would be unobtrusive and potentially relevant to the content.
Further ideas for content, could be to encourage the various sports and non-sports groups and clubs of Clapham to set up a profile on the Community page, enabling a Facebook Page style feel but on a more local level. Similarly local trades people could do the same, but there should probably be a distinction between profit and not for profit listings, with the former paying for space to discourage spam.
In terms of promotion, you're already doing most of the free forms of promotion. If advertising makes some profit, perhaps paid promotion could happen. I would recommend search, but perhaps event sponsorship and/or a (re)launch event would get the name out locally.
One last thing, "secret london" has been a massive success story on FB, with the website showing a vision for the future with its secretcities.com URL. Not easily copied, but the "love" prefix could be franchised out to others (perhaps delete that bit to stop people stealing the idea).

Richard Spalding replied to the topic Re: Do you find the Clapham Common festivals annoying? in the forums.
I think South West 4 was the first time I came to Clapham, and now I live here, so I definitely think they are excellent and really put Clapham on the map. The Ben & Jerry's festival was nicely done, and I'll be at SW4 this year too.
As a festival goer, the volume at the Common festivals is a bit low for my liking. Considering they always finish by 9pm I wish they could turn it up a little bit. As a resident I live on a road just off the common, but I don't think volumes would effect me, so can't speak for people on the Common.
